A QUESTION OF POETRY AT WAR...

Why isn't there much good poetry about the Second World War
Was it because, compared with the First, it was an easy war with a headline, “Small war in Europe, not many killed!”
Don't think so – maybe the four years of static and largely boring trench warfare in the First World War gave more opportunity to get verse just right?

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! -- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under I green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, --
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

* It is sweet and right to die for your country

by Wilfred Owen, killed a few weeks before the end of the First World War in 1918.

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST...!

The non-election, election of Juncker as president of the EU spells its end as we know it. It will unravel to a northern bloc or federation of countries such as Germany, France, Holland, Poland and the new ex Soviet countries from the eastern bloc.

Juncker's non-election will also confirm the seeming inevitability of the rest of Britain voting to leave the EU in 2017, after Scotland goes for independence in September 2014 and then applies to join the EU.

So after 2017, the new UK (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) will vote to leave the EU. This will start a ripple effect where the main Latin countries, Spain, Portugal – and maybe Italy, will also go, along with Greece and Ireland.

Politics in the new UK will also change radically as the withdrawal of Scotland's 40 permanent Labour MPs from Westminster will give the new UK an apparent permanent Tory majority – except that the Tory party, like the Republican party in the States, is already in the process of breaking into two distinct political groups, the Metropolitan business elite based on London and the Home Counties and a reactionary far right from the further regions of the country –  just like the Tea Party in the USA.

Labour is already starting to disappear with the demise of industry and an official working class and mortally infected by the poisoness legacy of Tony Blair (the surface socialist who 'didn't do God' while a secret right wing catholic obsessed with money). So three new political grouping will emerge; a metropolitan right based in London and the south east. A politically further right Tea Party  from the shires - and a liberal centre left from greater London, the Midlands and the North.

These new groupings will then cry out for a new Adolph, a new demagogue to emerge – probably in the figure of Boris Johnson, who'd combine elements of the Metropolitan Right with the far Right from the rest of the country...a lethal combination with the worsening social situation throughout Britain and Europe as economic and so political power inevitably moves rapidly east to India and China – in other words, the kaka is soon going to start seriously hitting the whirling blades...

THE COMPLETE BANALITY OF EVIL..!

Hitler and the Nazis overriding ambition was to produce a nation of  blond, blue eyed Nordic supermen - yet to their followers it never seemed incongruous that their supreme leaders, spouting this lethal nonsense, were such a collection of ugly, badly bred (according to their own tenets), trolls.

Hitler was a flatulent racked, ugly, distinctly non-blond gnome (and probable the final irony, had a Jewish grandmother).
Himmler,drop-jawed and sow-mouthed was yet another slack bodied, non-blond, non blue-eyed shuffling cadaver - but with an admittedly impressive background in the Nazis favourite  science;  eugenics - he'd been a chicken farmer.

Goebbels was a clubfooted weakling, again as dark as they came in eye and hair - while Goring, probably the most Nordic of them all, was an overly obese, mentally ill (been sectioned several times in Sweden, between the wars), chronic drug addict.

Did no one in the millions of chanting, gurning, Nordic supermen who turned up to parade in all their blonde glory, ever, for a moment, objectively compare all this incandescent rubbish against these essential outcasts - and the primary sources of all this fantastic guff..?

The tapestry exhibition...

Opened on the 3rd June evening and a lot of my friends (and daughter Katy) came up to it (in the Chelsea Arts Club). It was had a long, exhausting and drunken day and so far, have sold five...

Two of my friends in Spain have died - Carole and then Barbara Napier - more on both of them later when I can bear to write about two such wonderful and tragic women...

Also planning a book launch this Autumn of a diary I kept in 1991, while running a rig (tug & tow) between the Mississippi River and the Houston Ship Cana - down to the Yucatan Peninsula. The American government was dumping grain on the Mexican - grain hardly fit for cattle which the Mexicans were then selling in the shops down there.
It was a laugh a minute - when not screaming with fright; Mexico could be called a criminal state - but one run by W. C. Fields..!

More on it all later...
